Q. Is it possible to grow coffee in New Zealand?

A. Yes, there is an emerging industry with a small number of growers targeting commercial production primarily located in Northland as the mild conditions are suitable. 

Q. What are the land requirements for successfully growing coffee plants?

A. Coffee grows best in well drained soil on slopes, sheltered from wind.

Q. How long does it take to reach the first harvest of coffee plants?

A. About 3 - 5 years.

Q. Is it possible to make a profit from growing coffee?

A. Yes, particularly if coffee produced is graded as 'specialty'.

Q. Is there expert advice available that I can access if I am interested in becoming a commercial grower of coffee?

Q. Where can I buy coffee plants to grow commercially?

A. Plant stocks are building within Northland and are likely to be available for purchase in 2025 / 26. Lynwood Nurseries sell coffee plants of unknown cultivar (most likely some kind of Typica) and coffee plants of unknown cultivar are sold by various garden centres such as Bunnings, Mitre10, Kings, etc.
